Double trouble in North Dakota construction zones

Lawmakers could double fines in posted highway work zones where construction personnel are present.

HB1322 raises the minimum fine from $40 to $80 for the first 10 mph over the posted speed and raises the fee per additional mile per hour over 10 from $1 to $2. These fines only apply to highway construction zones where working construction personnel are present and where the posted speed limit sign states, “Minimum Fee $80.”

The House already passed the bill Feb. 13, and the Senate referred it to the Transportation Committee, which re-referred it to the Appropriations Committee. A committee hearing is scheduled for March 13.
