CDL exemption advances in Florida

A Florida bill that offers an exemption to driver's license requirements for certain tractor-trailer drivers has passed a Senate committee.

The Senate Transportation Committee voted 9-0 on March 5 in favor of SB300.

Under the bill, drivers operating a truck between 8,000 and 26,000 pounds or a truck more than 80 inches wide, but who use the truck for “private use,” can use a Class E license. Up till now, anyone driving a truck with those measurements had to have a Class D license.

According to a spokeswoman at the Legislature, the bill will now move into three different Senate committees: The Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, the Economic Development Committee and the full Appropriations Committee. If it passes those panels, it will be voted on by the full Senate.
