Alabama considers 5-1-1 service

Alabama officials are considering setting up a 5-1-1 telephone line that would alert drivers of road work, closings, delays, weather problems or other factors that would slow traffic, The Associated Press reported June 30.

The state has commissioned a study by the University of Alabama on how the system would be set up, and has looked at successes in other nearby states.

The study will not be completed until later this year, The AP reported. Seventeen states now have 5-1-1 systems, which were created under rules set by the Federal Communications Commission.
