The North Carolina Senate approved legislation June 5 that would authorize the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to use cameras to ticket drivers who run red lights.

Under HB562, a three-year pilot program proposed by Rep. Martha Alexander, D-Charlotte, and Rep. John Rhodes, R-Cornelius, police would be allowed to rig the automatic cameras on 14 of Charlotte’s deadliest roadways, News 14 Carolina reported.

The photo radar, which is a combination camera and radar gun that documents a vehicle’s speed and tags, snaps a picture of the vehicle and sends the owner a ticket in the mail. Violators are fined $50.

The bill now heads back to the House for consideration of Senate changes. If it gains approval there, it will head to the governor.
