The federal government moved June 4 to avert a crisis that threatened to cancel Fourth of July fireworks shows around the country.

A notice issued by the Homeland Security and Transportation departments aims to get fireworks moving by rail again, something that has not happened since February, The Kansas City Star reported.

Rail companies embargoed transporting fireworks and other commercial explosives in response to background check regulations issued by what is now the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Some trucking companies were also reluctant to transport the material. The companies feared the drivers would be prosecuted if they had not undergone a background check.

The notice clarifies that the bureau rules do not apply to rail workers, since they already are adequately overseen by the Department of Transportation.
