Lawmakers pledge safety measures for Phoenix highway

Arizona lawmakers pledged at a press conference this week to make state Highway 101 near Phoenix safer, The Arizona Republic reported recently.

The highway is a divided, interstate-style loop road that surrounds the Phoenix area on all but one side, the southwest.

Lawmakers said money from the federal government, as well as state gas taxes and vehicle license taxes, could be used to pay for additional patrols as well as other safety measures. Families of those killed on the road, which has had a particularly high death toll, want safety barriers, “saturation patrols,” and more police training, the newspaper reported.
