A proposal authorizing the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in North Carolina to use speed-radar cameras is now law.

Under the three-year pilot program, police are allowed to rig the automatic cameras on 14 of Charlotte's deadliest roadways, Winston-Salem's WXII TV reported.

The photo radar, which is a combination camera and radar gun that documents a vehicle's speed and tags, snaps pictures of speeders and red-light runners and sends them tickets in the mail. Violators will be fined $50 but will receive no driver's license or insurance points.

HB562 became law June 30 without the governor's signature.
