Grant will help ferry boats upgrade security

Alaska’s ferries may be safer after the state decided to use a portion of a federal grant to add surveillance cameras, explosives detection devices and other measure to nine terminals, The Associated Press reported July 8.

The money comes from 199 grants, totaling $170 million, awarded by the Transportation Security Administration to states, local governments and private companies.

The upgrades will be made at Bellingham, Wash., and Whittier, Homer, Juneau, Ketchikan, Haines, Sitka, Skagway and Petersburg, AK.

In a separate grant, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will give the port of Valdez $250,000 for port-security measures.
