Florida town eyes trucking reg violations

State and local officials in Marco Island, FL, conducted a sweep of truckers in the area, looking for safety, weight, logbook and other violations, the Naples Daily News reported Feb. 26.

Marco Police Chief Roger Reinke told the newspaper that four trucks were put out of service for violations; five had no violations.

Local police and state DOT officials used portable scales during the checks. Local officers were given training by DOT officials on trucking regulations. However, despite the participation of local police, the fines produced by the sweep all went to the state; all the tickets referred to state, not local, laws.
