A Vermont lawmaker is pushing legislation that would allow police to pull over drivers for smoking with a child under age 12 in the vehicle.
Under H130, sponsored by Rep. Thomas DePoy, R-Rutland, any driver in violation would face a fine up to $100.
DePoy told The Rutland Herald he didn’t like the idea of telling people what to do, but said he knew from experience what it’s like to be a child riding in a vehicle with someone who smokes.
“I grew up with my grandmother and my mother, who smoked,” he said. “It bugged me as a kid, and I know it bugs kids today.”
