Iowa governor wants higher speeding fines

The fine for motorists going 6 to 10 mph over the speed limit in Iowa would increase from $20 to $35 under a proposal by the state’s governor, The Des Moines Register reported Feb. 11.

In addition, Gov. Tom Vilsack’s plan would increase fines from $60 to $100 on highways with a 65 mph speed limit. But speeders’ liabilities wouldn’t end there; surcharges and court costs would add to the price of a lead foot as well.

The governor has written $2.5 million in additional fine revenue into his budget for the new fiscal year.

Legislative leaders have said that they would be fine with increased fines – provided speed limits are raised on the state’s highways too.
