Mississippi could catch up with the rest of the country regarding 53-foot trailers as lawmakers consider a proposal to increase the maximum allowable length of semi-trailers from 50 feet to 53 feet.

Currently, 53-foot trailers are allowed on federal highways, but are required to get a permit for Mississippi state highways, according to The Associated Press.

On Jan. 20, state Sen. Bob Dearing introduced SB2531, a bill that would make the change. The measure received a go-ahead from the Senate Highways and Transportation Committee Jan. 22 and passed the Senate Feb. 6. The bill has been referred to the House Transportation Committee.
