California budget deal could slash funds for road work

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and leaders of the General Assembly have worked out a budget deal, media outlets reported, but for truckers and others who use the states roads, it’s not all good news.

Contained in that deal is a huge cut in transportation funds – in the range of $5.4 billion – and the transfer of up to $1 billion more to other parts of the budget, according to The Los Angeles Times. Numerous highway projects are included in that total, including many designed to cut congestion.

The governor made his plan public at a meeting of the California Transportation Commission Dec. 11. It could affect more than 140 projects statewide.
