The Georgia State Transportation Board wants to create a bank that would loan money to cities and counties in the state in an effort to speed work on highways and other roads, local media reported.
The bank, which would have to be approved by the state’s Legislature and Gov. Sonny Perdue, would need $100 million just to get off the ground. The idea is modeled after similar efforts in South Carolina and Florida.
Projects that could be aided include road widenings, highway interchanges, road improvements and new bridges.
According to The Macon Telegraph, 32 projects have received loans from the state transportation bank in Florida, totaling roughly $465 million. In South Carolina, the loans have totaled over $3 billion statewide.
