Arkansas will soon be home to what some are calling the largest truck stop in the country.
The Memphis Business Journal reported recently that St. Francis County, which sits along the Mississippi River across from Memphis, TN, will construct the “truck mall” at one of five locations along Interstate 40. The county will develop the $50 million, 200-acre site through a public-private partnership and then lease portions out to private operators.
Promoters in the county say it will include two things that truckers have told officials they want most in the facility: a secure environment, provided in part by a sheriff substation that will be part of the facility; and clean showers and restrooms.
Groundbreaking on the massive undertaking, which will have parking for up to 1,000 trucks, is expected to take place sometime during the next two years, the newspaper reported.
Currently, the largest truckstop in the United States is also near the Mississippi River: the Iowa 80 Truck Stop, about 10 miles west of Davenport, IA, on Interstate 80. That truck stop is the future home of the Trucking Hall of Fame, which is expected to be completed by 2005.
