A temporary bridge is in place on U.S. 2 over the Milk River in far north central Montana, replacing the structure damaged in an accident Nov. 18, The Montana Department of Transportation announced Dec. 3.
Vehicles are restricted to 45 mph over the bridge, a wood and asphalt structure, to preserve its surface until a permanent span can be put into place.
The old bridge was damaged in an accident involving two semis. A bulldozer carried by one of the tractor-trailers clipped a bridge support, spun on the trailer and hit the other semi’s trailers, The Associated Press reported.
MDT officials said the new bridge will be able to handle the load until the new span is up.
“This bridge is capable of doing everything that a permanent structure does,” MDT spokesman Mick Johnson said in a statement. “The only restriction, if you can even call it that, will be a 45 mph speed limit – and we’re doing that because we want to ensure the longevity of the asphalt deck.”
The bridge is west of the town of Lohman, which is northeast of Great Falls not far from the Canadian border.
