Talking on a handheld cell phone while driving may soon be illegal in the District of Columbia, The Associated Press reported.
The D.C. Council has given the preliminary OK to a bill banning the use of mobile phones while driving except in emergencies or with a hands-free device.
The bill must pass a final vote next month, but the Dec. 2 action suggests that will be only a formality.
Drivers caught violating the law would be fined $100, but would receive no points on their license. First-time violators would have the fine suspended if they show proof of purchasing a hands-free accessory.
