Arrest made in year-old case of murdered OOIDA member

A suspect was arrested Nov. 24 in the death of trucker and OOIDA member Roger Ware, killed a year ago in a San Antonio, FL, truckstop, the St. Petersburg Times reported.

Ware died Nov. 5, 2002, of head injuries suffered in the attack. His death came less than two weeks after a trucker was shot outside another truckstop at the same exit. The two incidents were not linked, law-enforcement officials said.

The Florida newspaper said that Hudson, FL, resident Michael Berencsi, 50, an acquaintance of Ware’s, was arrested in Bridgewater, MA, around 4 p.m. Monday.

Authorities told the Times that Ware expected to meet another acquaintance at the truckstop, but Berencsi showed up instead. The report did not say what the motive in the beating death was; Ware’s cargo was not stolen.

Ware, 59, of Milan, OH, was found by another trucker unconscious in the parking lot at the Dixie Boy Truck Stop at I-75 and Florida Highway 52. He was flown by helicopter to St. Joseph Hospital in Tampa.

Ware reportedly drove the route between Ohio and Florida weekly. He was hauling kitchen cabinets.
