PJAX Inc, Gibsonia, PA, resolved a discrimination lawsuit Nov. 23 involving five female workers and agreed to pay more than $500,000 to the women.
PJAX is a private trucking firm serving Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware and Maryland. The company employs about 1,500.
Under the terms, the company must revise its anti-discrimination policy, implement anti-discrimination training and hire a human resources specialist to investigate discrimination complaints.
The reforms are spelled out in an agreement between the company and the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
A lawsuit filed in May accused PJAX of subjecting several female employees to sexual harassment since at least 1999.
The EEOC alleged PJAX's owners and other managers screamed vulgarities at female employees, called them sexually derogatory names and made them perform chores, including picking up owners' laundry and cleaning their cars.
Though company officials denied the allegations, they decided to resolve the suit to avoid the expense of a court case, said PJAX spokeswoman Roxanne Germ, The Associated Press reported.
