While visiting Haditha, Iraq, Maj. Gen. Charles H. Swannack Jr., commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, attended a ceremony on the U.S. military base to launch an Iraqi trucking company, according to The Associated Press.
Although the trucking company is expected to create 500 new jobs for truckers ferrying supplies for U.S. forces, only four Iraqis attended the ceremony – Ali Hatem Suleiman, a businessman from Ramadi who signed the contract with Swannack, an associate and two truck drivers who brought their trucks into the U.S. base for the ceremony.
The AP explained that Iraqis fear being seen as helping, working for or cooperating with the Americans.
"We are here to serve our people," Suleiman told The AP. "People are sleeping in their homes without work. Yes, there will be threats against us, but that doesn't matter.
"The resistance does not feed anybody."
