Michigan doesn't know which drivers have insurance

Truckers whose rigs get hit by a four-wheeler in Michigan may or may not get their damages covered. The Detroit News reported recently that the state isn’t sure how many motorists on its roads even have insurance.

While those renewing plates or stopped by police must have proof of insurance, the newspaper said, Michigan, unlike other states, does not have a system to track which drivers still have insurance.

The News said the state was working on a computer system that would allow it to track which cars did not have insurance, but the system is not yet in place.
