A bill permitting police in Rhode Island to rig cameras on roadways as a deterrent to red-light runners is dead for the year.

H5451, written by Rep. Peter T. Ginaitt, D-Warwick, would have allowed state and local authorities to use cameras for enforcement of traffic signals.

Under the proposal, a red-light running vehicle’s license plate number would be captured on camera and a ticket mailed to the registered owner, Ginaitt wrote. Violators could be fined $100.

The bill was still in the House Judiciary Committee when the regular session ended last month.
