Canine sniffs weed; Laredo trucker busted

A search at a checkpoint on state Highway 359 in Laredo, TX, led U.S. Border Patrol agents to marijuana bundles floating in a tanker truck headed out of Laredo Aug. 1, the Laredo Morning Times reported.

The driver, Laredo resident Jose Arturo Vergara, 24, was taken into custody in connection with the 853-pound marijuana seizure. According to authorities, the estimated street value of the marijuana was $682,000.

Agents reported Vergara pulled up to the Freer checkpoint at approximately 5:40 a.m. driving the tanker truck with Texas license plates. He was referred to the secondary lane, where a drug-sniffing canine alerted agents to the presence of narcotics within the tanker, according to the criminal complaint.

A look into the tanker revealed 22 cellophane-wrapped marijuana bundles floating on top of a liquid, officials reported.
