Road taxes would have an easier trip under CA bill

A bill that would make it easier to raise money for roads in California has passed an Assembly committee.

In California, it now takes a two-thirds vote to increase taxes for roads. Under ACA7, a local or regional transportation agency could impose a half-cent sales tax if it were approved by a lower standard of 55 percent of voters in an election.

The Transportation Committee approved the bill by a vote of 13 to 5 on April 21. It is now before the Committee on Elections, Redistricting and Constitutional Amendments. The bill would have to be approved by voters to become law.
