New Jersey among states targeting drunken driving, highway dollars

With the threat of losing millions in federal transportation funds, New Jersey is among several states pursuing legislation to lower the state's blood-alcohol concentration limit from 0.10 percent to 0.08.

Since 2000, New Jersey is one of only about a dozen states yet to adopt legislation signed by then-President Clinton that requires each state to define legally drunk as 0.08 percent blood alcohol content or lose federal highway dollars.

The Garden State stands to lose $72 million in highway aid over the next four years if it doesn't enact the standard.

A682, sponsored by Assemblywoman Loretta Weinberg, D-Teaneck, is in the Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee.
