Illinois police shot and killed a 390-pound Bengal tiger Saturday after the animal escaped from its owner at a Bloomington truckstop. A veterinarian unsuccessfully tried to tranquilize the tiger four times before police killed it because it appeared to become aggressive.
The 2-year-old, 8-foot-long male tiger escaped from its trailer around 5 a.m. at the TravelCenters of America truckstop off I-55/I-74 and exit 160.
The animal reportedly was being transported in a wooden crate on a trailer pulled by a car. The tiger's owner, Mary Jeanne Williams of Ivanhoe, TX, told police the animal broke out of the crate when her 19-year-old son went to give it some water.
The tiger hid in shrubbery for most of the afternoon near a fence line at the truckstop separating it from a residential neighborhood.
After locating the tiger, officials trapped the animal in the brush line. Police shot the animal when it reportedly made aggressive moves toward a pickup truck with several conservation officers on top.
