Canadian government pledges less trucks on 401

Canadian trucking companies are not likely to be happy with the Crown's plan for Highway 401. The Canadian government Monday announced their plan to ease environmental concerns and reduce traffic on North America's busiest freeway includes thinning out commercial trucks.

The plan is a new strategy by the government to help reduce congestion in cities and bottlenecks in trade corridors. Transport Canada Minister David Collenette told The Toronto Star that moving truck traffic to rail and water would free up the overtaxed Highway 401 for carpooling and would cut down on truck emissions in urban areas. He said 28 percent of the country's greenhouse gas emissions, such as carbon dioxide, come from vehicles.

Collenette said he will bring a new transportation blueprint to the cabinet this fall. He said the "intermodal shift" from road to rail will require new money, but he stopped short of placing a price tag on the program.
