Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. said Wednesday it will lay off 450 workers at its Union City, TN, plant starting Oct. 1 because of the slow U.S. economy, Reuters reports.

The Union City plant, which has 3,800 workers, makes consumer replacement tires as well as tires for car and truck manufacturers. Industrywide, consumer and commercial tire shipments this year are expected to grow less than 1 percent due to the sluggish U.S. economy, according to a survey released Wednesday by the Rubber Manufacturers Association.

Goodyear's North American shipments have lagged those of the industry for several months as it lost market share from year-earlier levels.
