Ohio highway lane opens

An extra lane on Ohio's I-90 near Avon finally opened this week - four years after it was finished. The total cost for the nine miles of new lanes in each direction is $55 million.

Most of the Avon portion was finished in December 1998. But, only now, has work wrapped up near Westlake.

The holdup had been getting the road widened through Westlake. The Ohio transportation department did not want to make traffic go from three lanes to two and back to three lanes in a stretch of a few miles.

The road budget to complete work had previously been tied up with other major projects, including construction of express lanes for I-271 in eastern Cuyahoga County.
