Eight regional airlines and three regional airline associations have formed a coalition to fight the U.S. Postal Service's decision to terminate regional airmail contracts by May.
The USPS has contracted with private regional cargo and passenger airlines for mail delivery to America's rural areas. But, the postal service now wants to use trucks for rural mail delivery - a move Save American Airmail says will slow delivery, create delays during bad weather and cost jobs and infrastructure investments for regional airlines.
"The Postal Service is rejecting a proven, cost-effective system without justification in favor of an unproven system that will mean slower service for millions of Americans," says Kent Craford, spokesman for the coalition. "Rural America could see mail delivery time go from the long-standard three days to four or five days, with no evidence of cost savings."
