Bus association drives for federal security funds

The American Bus Association (ABA) wants Congress to pass motorcoach security legislation introduced last year that will help the intercity bus industry fund security efforts.

The request comes in the wake of an attack this week in California on a bus driver that resulted in fatalities. Intercity buses serve nearly 800 million passengers annually in more than 4,000 communities.

"Congress has provided 2-5 dollars for security per passenger for airlines and Amtrak and just 2 cents for security per passenger on a motorcoach," said ABA President Peter J. Pantuso.

Both house and senate lawmakers are mulling a transportation appropriation bill that would provide additional funding for motorcoach security. HR3924 would provide $200 million a year for bus security for up to three years. S1738 would provide $200 million for two years.
