French truckers lift roadblocks, vow more protests

Faced with pressure from police, truckers abandoned road blockades across France Monday, but vowed to continue their protest Tuesday in another form. Truckers took to the streets after weekend wage talks between employers and major unions collapsed.

Truckers had set up about 40 blockades by midday Monday, prompting delays and fuel shortages in some places, Reuters news service reported. But some blockades were scrapped under pressure from police and non-striking drivers.

The French government warned it would act to prevent a repeat of bitter conflicts in the 1990s that crippled key industries and disrupted trade.

Most of the roadblocks allowed cars through and primarily targeted semis. Elsewhere, some truckers drove at a snail's pace as part of the protest.
