Forget Furbies. Or Elmo. Or any of the other toy crazes of years past.
In Boston this year, according to The Boston Globe, one of the hottest toys is a tractor-trailer.
The gift in question is the Hess Gas Station truck, a low-tech delight with few electronic features that is sold only at Hess gas stations, the paper said. Bostonians still produce a steady demand for the trucks, which harken back to the days when companies offered incentives to draw customers in.
This year's model features an 18-wheeler flatbed with head and taillights and a pullout ramp. It includes a 1920s biplane with collapsible wings that rides on the back. A record 1.5 million of the truck-airplane combo, which premiered earlier this month, were produced for 2002. All are expected to sell out well before Santa makes his run.
The trucks have become collectibles. Some are priced for $300 or more on eBay, and sell for thousands of dollars on collector's Web sites. But for desperate parents this year, it's a little cheaper. The Globe said the 2002 Hess truck retails for $19.99 with batteries included. The company's gas stations are found up and down the East Coast from Massachusetts to Florida.
