Icy conditions caused a series of accidents Sunday in Wyoming, closing a 90-mile stretch of I-80 for about four hours, KKTU News reported. One crash involved 12 tractor-trailers and six cars.
At least 110 accidents were reported from midnight Saturday to Sunday morning. The ice was left behind by the remnants of a major storm that dumped at least a foot of snow in the central and western mountains overnight.
Authorities closed the eastbound lanes from Sinclair to Laramie about noon and reopened them at 3:45 p.m. Traffic was escorted to Laramie on U.S. 30 in groups of 100 vehicles until the reopening.
Black-ice advisories for many highways in northwest Wyoming were lifted Sunday afternoon. No tractor-trailer traffic was allowed into Teton Pass, where the chain law was in effect.
