Car hits truck hauling explosives

A car driven by a Nashville, IN, woman crossed the center line and collided head-on with a tractor-trailer in Bloomington, IN, Wednesday, according to press reports, killing the woman and forcing the evacuation of 1,500 students at the nearby University of Indiana.

Authorities told The Bloomington Herald-Times that the woman, Linda Lowry, 50, might have fallen asleep while driving. The students, mainly a group living in fraternities and sororities within a half-mile of the accident, were evacuated after police read the truck's inventory, which included 13 tons of explosives.

The truckdriver, 27-year-old Aaron Jessie of Columbus, IN, was making a delivery from Columbus to Mitchell for Austin Powder Co., The Associated Press said. The Herald-Times said Jessie was taken to Bloomington Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

Jackie Taylor, a spokesman for the Indiana State Police, told The Herald-Times it appeared that Jessie was driving safely and that the company he was hauling for was in compliance with legal requirements regarding the load.

"Everything had been done by the book when we checked the paperwork," Taylor said. "Their truck, it seems, just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time."

However, The AP reported officials were investigating whether the trailer's load complied with rules covering the transport of hazardous materials.

The accident occurred in Bloomington near the intersection of East 17th Street and the Indiana Highway 45/46 Bypass.
