Nebraska town outlaws engine brakes

The Elkhorn, NE, City Council has outlawed the use of engine brakes within the city. In a vote taken last week, the council unanimously approved the measure, the Omaha World-Herald reported.

Many of the complaints that led to the ordinance came from residents along 204th Street, which is Nebraska Highway 31. The road passes directly through the center of Elkhorn, and is one of three state highways that run through the city.

Figures from the state's League of Municipalities show that more than 130 cities in Nebraska have passed similar measures, including Bennington, which joined the list in August, and Omaha, which in 2001 passed an ordinance limiting use of engine brakes, the paper said.
