CHP strips officials of command

The California Highway Patrol recently ousted two top officials following a two-week investigation into their activities, according to a published report. The investigation is continuing into whether the patrol has enough evidence to file criminal charges.

The investigation has resulted in Capt. Eli Molina losing his command in Bakersfield and Deputy Chief Gary Dominguez losing his command in Fresno. The pair have been under investigation since a series of allegations against them were reported to Commissioner Spike Helmick's office.

The allegations against Molina generally involve abuse of power, The Bakersfield Californian reported. They include directing on-duty CHP officers to re-route traffic around Molina's central Bakersfield home during a wedding, accepting the use of a race car without authorization and possibly covering up details of an accident involving an expensive car the CHP borrowed for a parade. The investigation reportedly includes other issues that haven't been made public.

The allegations against Dominguez are described as more personal in nature and separate from allegations against Molina.

Molina and Dominguez have not retired, but it would not be surprising if they do, Helmick told the newspaper. If they don't retire, the investigation would be submitted to the state Personnel Board, where its contents would become public.
