Truckdrivers passing through the east side of Indianapolis who expected to see construction work on I-70 and I-465 completed by Nov. 1 are in for a disappointment.
WRTV television reported Monday that workers would take a few more days before they finished the project. The interchange at I-70 and I-465 was scheduled to open Monday, but the station reported officials were waiting for higher temperatures so that crews could lay temporary pavement on the bridges. The interchange should be open by this weekend.
The Indianapolis Star said earlier that the construction crew could have earned a $1 million bonus by completing the interchange by Nov. 1. In fact, Tim Johnson, project manager for Walsh Construction, told the paper in late October that all lanes were expected to open by Nov. 2.
Although the state Transportation Department offered a bonus for early completion, Walsh's company has until Thanksgiving to finish, the paper said. The $67 million project is designed to ease rush-hour traffic jams for the 216,000 vehicles that move through the interchange each day.
