A trucking company has paid $13 million to a man who was injured when an Amtrak train struck one of the company's tractor-trailers two and a half years ago, The Associated Press reported late last week.
The announcement, which was made a week before a civil trail in the matter was to begin, called for Tim-Bar Corp. of Hanover, PA, to pay $13 million and Amtrak to pay $1 million to Selwyn Gafen, 44, of Coral Springs, FL. Gafen's car was on Cypress Creek Road at the CSX tracks in Fort Lauderdale, FL, when the collision occurred. He suffered severe head injuries when an 80-pound, 8-foot steel beam from the truck flew through his windshield.
According to officials with Carton Sales, the truckdriver was not injured in the collision.
The settlement "was a fair resolution to the case," Robert McIntosh, an attorney for Carton Sales and Manufacturing, told the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. Tim-Bar does business in Florida as Carton Sales and Manufacturing of Hialeah, The AP said.
