Several highways in the Detroit area were closed for part of the weekend after a sudden drop in temperatures and an early snow made travel hazardous, the Detroit Free Press reported.
The winter weather "came up on us quick," Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel told the Free Press.
While state police were unable to determine the exact number of accidents, they said it was in the hundreds. Sgt. Melinda Logan of the state police said that at one point, 15 accidents were reported on one stretch of I-94 in Macomb County.
