VA's Fauquier County targets truckers

Officials in Fauquier County, VA, recently announced a "zero-tolerance" policy when it comes to speeding, noise ordinances and equipment requirements, particularly along Virginia Highway 28, U.S. 17 and U.S. 29.

Sheriff Joe Higgs said the word had already spread throughout the trucking community.

"The truckers are talking on their CB radios that we're out there," Higgs told the Fauquier Times-Democrat. "We're not a very big hit with truckers right now."

Higgs said deputies were ordered to ticket speeding trucks if they went 1 mph over normal "tolerance levels." He said noise meters would be used to measure engine compression braking, and noise violators would be subject to a maximum fine of $2,500.

Meanwhile, Higgs said he would send a few deputies to special training that would help them conduct truck inspections.

"We're asking Delegate Scott Lingamfelter to sponsor a bill for us that allows my deputies to be able to enforce weights and inspection of trucks," he said.
