Court date nears for teen charged in trucker's death

A 16-year-old south Ashtabula County, OH, resident charged in the July traffic death of a Pennsylvania truckdriver attended his pretrial Nov. 8 in Ashtabula County Juvenile Court.

The teen and a 14-year-old boy, also of South County, face charges of involuntary manslaughter and felonious assault. The 16-year-old remains in custody pending his trial and the 14-year-old is under house arrest until his trial, set for Jan. 28.

Investigators believe the pair threw debris onto Route 11 from an overpass, causing a truck driven by Gregory R. Holcomb, of Albion, PA, to veer off the road and hit nearby trees.

Holcomb's semi was traveling south when it left the four-lane highway about 500 feet south of the Mill Road overpass in New Lyme Township. The truck, carrying 45,000 pounds of paper, burst into flames early July 23. Holcomb died at the scene.

Several days after the crash, Ohio Highway Patrol Lt. James Sivak, Ashtabula post commander, said pieces of brick paving stones had been found in the highway's northbound lanes near the crash site. Lt. Sivak said there also had been other reports of items dropped from Route 11 overpasses in the county, including in Colebrook and Denmark townships.
