On behalf of the company's employees in the Washington, D.C., area and nationwide, Clear Channel Worldwide Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Lowry Mays today expressed his sincere thanks to 700WLW Radio talk show host Dale Sommers for his role in helping police apprehend two suspects in the recent sniper killings.
Sommers, host of "The Truckin' Bozo" overnight show on 700WLW in Cincinnati, informed his listeners early last Thursday morning that police were looking for a particular vehicle in connection with the shootings. Alert trucker Ron Lantz of Kentucky heard the information on Sommers' show and soon spotted the suspects' car parked in a Maryland rest area. Lantz called police, who apprehended the two suspects. He even used his own rig to block a potential escape route out of the rest area.
"We're proud for Clear Channel to have played a part in ending this terrible episode," said Mays. "We've always focused this company on serving our communities, and I can think of no higher service than what Dale Sommers and Ron Lantz did to help the authorities in this case. The entire Clear Channel family is profoundly grateful."
Mays said the apprehension of the suspects underscores the power of radio to support the public interest. 700WLW, for example, while broadcasting from Cincinnati, is heard almost nationwide in the overnight hours, creating a huge network of listeners who were on the lookout for the suspected sniper's car thanks to the Truckin' Bozo program. Clear Channel's stations in the Washington, D.C-Maryland-Virginia region provided the public with critical information throughout the three-week sniper ordeal, as well.
