The California Highway Patrol is looking at the possibility of using nuclear detection devices at some Port of Entries. The devices are part of Gov. Gray Davis' strategy to broaden the state's anti-terrorism efforts.

Nuclear detection devices use gamma-rays to determine if a cargo container has radioactive materials inside. The devices are intended to help prevent terrorists from smuggling bomb-making materials into the state.

According to Sgt. Bob Ghiglieri, spokesman for the California Highway Patrol, there are no hard plans in place. "The state is just looking at the idea," he said. "If we do get them they would be placed at Port of Entries and possibly some seaports. The specific ones haven't even been discussed, but Calexico, Otay Mesa, Truckee, Carson, Dunsmuir and Gilroy would be the logical choices, plus some seaports.
