The U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced stricter minimum requirements for U.S. and Canadian motor carriers applying for operating authority.

Starting next year, applicants must demonstrate their knowledge of safety regulations and undergo an on-site safety audit within the first 18 months of operations before receiving permanent operating authority.

The FMCSA will provide educational and technical assistance. Under the rules, new entrants must certify compliance with regulations on driver qualifications, hours of service, controlled substance and alcohol testing, vehicle condition, accident monitoring, and hazardous materials transportation.
