Six people died in a fiery six-vehicle pileup on a smoke- and fog-shrouded South Carolina highway early Monday, according to published reports. Three semis were involved in the deadly accident.

Reportedly, the chain reaction started when a sport utility vehicle struck the back of a tractor-trailer that had slowed because of poor visibility caused by a nearby forest fire.

According to news reports, the driver, Sherman Boutte of Philadelphia, got out of his rig and was struck by a car carrying five people. That car was then reportedly hit by another semi in a fiery wreck that killed all five inside.

The crashes happened about 2:30 a.m. on Interstate 95 near Charleston. The pileup also included another car and semi-trailer.
