Two barges hit Missouri bridge

At 6:30 a.m. Sunday, two barges hit a U.S. Highway 36 bridge near St. Joseph, MO, according to the Kansas City Star. A tug boat was pushing four barges when they came apart and two of the barges hit the bridge about a mile downstream.

The bridge, which crosses the Missouri River, was closed until around 8:30 a.m. that morning while Missouri Department of Transportation inspected the bridge. Reports say the bridge was not damaged, although one of the barges was damaged.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Michael Kirby told the newspaper it is not uncommon for a barge to hit a bridge without causing damage.
