Mexican official objects to NAFTA rules

According to press reports, a top Mexican transportation official May 29 objected to U.S. regulations governing cross-border trucking because he said they did not comply with NAFTA.

Aaron Dychter, Mexican subsecretary of communications and transport, also said the regulations are unfair because they only grant provisional and not permanent operating authority to Mexican truckers.

Meanwhile, both U.S. and Mexican officials said the objections could be worked out and were not likely to delay the border opening, scheduled for mid-summer.
