Iowa commission votes to delay some road projects

About $100 million in road work in Iowa will be delayed under a plan approved by the Iowa Transportation Commission, The Quad-City Times reported Dec. 12. The new plan is designed to help the state deal with a budget shortfall.

Under the proposal, approved by the commission, which oversees the DOT, the completion of several projects will be pushed back till 2007. They include:

  • I-235 in the Des Moines area.
  • The Fairfield bypass by the U.S. 34 corridor.
  • The Fort Madison bypass on U.S. 61.

Land Line reported Nov. 25 that the state still planned to fund $2.07 billion in work, including:

  • The Avenue of the Saints, a multi-highway route that will eventually connect St. Louis with St. Paul, MN.
  • U.S. 151 from Cedar Rapids to Dubuque.
  • Iowa Highway 60 from Le Mars to the Minnesota border.
  • A four-lane Des Moines-to-Burlington corridor.
  • And a relocation project on Iowa Highway 5 from Des Moines to Knoxville.
