California truckers who get bombarded by junk e-mails, or spam, may have reason to rejoice.
State Sen. Debra Bowen (D-Redondo Beach) says she wants to ban the junk e-mail cluttering computer mailboxes, KCBS television reported recently.
"At this point, it's estimated that spam is about a quarter to a third of the traffic on the Internet, and that means lots of time spent dealing with spam and lots of excess capacity soaked up by the costs of carrying somebody else's advertisement," Bowen told KCBS.
Bowen's bill would allow consumers to sue for $500 for each unsolicited junk e-mail. She is confident the proposed legislation will pass.
"People are sick and tired of spam. Even people who would love to have fried Spam on a plate don't want it in their computer," Bowen said.
If SB12 becomes law, California would be the first state to ban junk e-mail.
